The officers of the RPD’s Traffic Enforcement Unit are committed to reduce traffic collisions, relieve traffic congestion, and to protect and save lives. This objective is achieved through education and enforcement of traffic laws. Officers mainly focus on violations that have, in the past, been contributing factors to crashes that were investigated by this Unit. Officers assigned to this Unit work 8-hour shifts, Monday – Friday, so they are available during peak traffic hours.
The Traffic Officers’ primary role is to investigate most traffic crashes which occur during the shift, as well as spend more time on violation enforcement than the shift patrol officers. Although as sworn officers they can handle any call for service or any emergency in the time of need. In addition to traffic enforcement, these officers participate in specialized programs such as City events, safety or school programs, safety check points, and oversee certain traffic-related events such as parades and funeral escorts.
